Fujifilm Instax Mini 9 Review

Fujifilm Instax Mini 9 Review

The Fujifilm Instax Mini 9 Instant Camera is a perky little throwback to the instamatic prints we enjoyed decades ago. It comes in several colors, like Flamingo Pink, Cobalt Blue, Lime Green, Smoky White, and Ice Blue. It uses actual film cartridges that are tracked by an analog counter on the back of the unit, telling you how many you have left in the pack. It also has a built in flash, which you will need for many shots.

The Fujifilm Instax Mini 9 is 4.7” high, 4.6” wide, and 2.7” deep and it weighs about 10.8 ounces. It’s very existence is about portability.

The Instax Mini 9 is tiny, as we’ve said. It is meant for fun, not necessarily professional function, so it’s tiny size understandably compromises the unit’s ability to provide many functions other than point and shoot. Because the shutter is squeezed in just above the lens, it can be difficult to take photos in landscape mode.

When holding the camera it feels kinda of cheap because of the plastic it uses for the casing, but nevertheless its sturdily built. However, when shooting in landscape you have to make sure you hand doesn’t get in the way of your shots.

Its small size is the prominent feature on the Instax Mini 9. It can slip into a pocket or into a hard shell cover that is sold separately. For close-up shots, there is an add-on lens that requires you to stay between 13 and 20 or so inches away from your subject. If you can’t help but take a selfie, the Instax 9 Mini 9 makes up for the lack of a front-facing LCD by placing a tiny mirror next to the lens. Held at arm’s length, it allow you to line yourself up in the shot just about perfectly. For any shot, it’s important to note that the flash is set to go off automatically, with the only control being over the nature of the light around your subject. You can adjust this with a dial around the lens, and the camera will make suggestions based on the light around its sensors (so remember that if your subject is in a different light, you might want to select a different setting than the one the camera suggests).

The camera is fully automatic, so its pretty easy to use. There aren’t a lot of controls. Interface is very simple, the LCD in the rear shows how many shots remaining, There are ten for each film pack. The viewfinder makes framing a shot easy at short to moderate distances, but at longer distance it becomes a problem. The most difficult part of using the camera is loading the film. You are supposed to take a photo so the covers pops, which is strange, but its not a problem once you find out.

The photos are not going to satisfy if you are looking for gallery-ready professional artist-level pieces. However, with the right light setting, the look of the instant prints can actually be quite beautiful. It can be difficult to line up the macro lens attachment at the right distance from your close-up subject, and the wrong range will just lead to blurry or indiscernible photos. The high-key setting, which is meant to make the shot brightly saturated with light, does not always maintain enough photo clarity to be worth it. For extra drama, the Instax Mini 9 also has an option for black and white film.

The Instax Mini 9 retails for between $60.00 and $70.00. Film is, obviously, sold separately and you can usually get a pack of 20 for about $12.50. That comes out to about $.63 per shot and you will pay more (almost double that) for black and white film. It’s not an inordinate price compared to other instants for either the unit or the refills. In fact, all told, this is a pretty worthwhile pick for taking fun, instant photos.

The Instax Mini 70 uses its own film produced by Fujifilm. To save money on the film, you should buy a pack of 20 or more, since there are sharp discounts available.

This is the pack of 60 (3 twin packs). The is very popular among customers, because it offers the best prices.

Protect your Fujifilm Instax camera with a polysynthetic leather case which is available in different colors and you can choose the case according to the color of your instant camera’s color. The case is available right now for purchase and you can snatch it away.

Looks cute?

The Fujifilm Instax Mini 9 is one of the most fun mini instant cameras on the market. The options for varying shots are somewhat limited and usability, especially in landscape mode, leaves a little to be desired, but the little extras like the fun colors and the tiny selfie mirror make up for its shortcomings. In summary, for the price it’s definitely a fun little gadget.
